Our teams craft integrated responses to issues that span the security, justice and governance sectors.
Our motivation is simple: to help lay the foundations for societies to prosper and for people to realise their full potential.
Our motivation is simple: to help lay the foundations for societies to prosper and for people to realise their full potential.
Our teams build the capacity of states to meet the expectations of their people, and for different social groups to articulate their expectations of public institutions and agree upon common goals.
We work with local partners to develop security systems that are professional, effective and ultimately accountable to civilian authorities.
We don’t deal with security agencies in silos, but adopt a whole-of-system approach that strengthens the central oversight and coordination mechanisms that enable threats to be identified and addressed in a joined-up and transparent manner.
To facilitate this, we build agencies’ institutional capacity to enforce the rule of law, offering bespoke support packages around national security planning, public safety and critical incident response, and community safety.
We mainstream gender and social inclusion considerations throughout our work to improve security outcomes for women, girls, men and boys. Read more about about our Women, Peace and Security focussed programming below.
Effective and accountable public institutions are essential pillars of sustainable and inclusive prosperity.
We support our partners to build strong systems of democratic governance that make public institutions more responsive to the needs of the people they serve, and capable of delivering services effectively and equitably.
To empower the state to uphold its side of the social contract, we promote the development of stronger links between state governance structures, traditional authorities and civil society.
Our teams work with a broad range of stakeholders including local government, legislatures, judiciary, central oversight institutions and civil society to improve internal oversight measures, protect fundamental rights, and strengthen core state functions around procurement, financial management and donor coordination.
We support the people directly affected by crises and instability to have a say in the decisions that affect their lives, whether in terms of the goods or services they receive or their ability to access future prosperity.
Enabling civil society to negotiate the terms of the social contract with the state effectively, we foster mutual trust and lay the groundwork for sustainable societal resilience and peace.
Our approach emphasises community safety over state security, encouraging the participation of all segments of society in creating both vertical (state-society) and horizontal (community-community) cohesion.
We use a combination of traditional and digital tools that increase access to public information; expand the spaces for dialogue between CSOs, citizens and the state; build the long-term strategic planning and organisational development structures and procedures of our partners; and create opportunities for peer-to-peer learning and mentoring.
We work with civil society and public sector institutions to build inclusive justice systems that can be relied upon to act fairly, impartially and in line with human rights norms.
Our teams support state institutions to promote and adhere to the rule of law, and are committed to building modern and effective legal institutions and codes. We also focus on supporting members of vulnerable groups to have their voices heard and exercise their rights, empowering civil society to engage with the justice system effectively.
We have a track record that includes offering policy advice in relation to detention management and prison overcrowding, strategic planning support to central authorities, localised due process strengthening within police stations, enhancing response mechanisms for online SGBV and domestic violence, and creating new access points for stateless people to receive government services.
