Activists mobilise across Jordan to protect community against online abuse

February 2022

AMMAN: With the Covid-19 pandemic contributing to a spike in cybercrime in Jordan, local activists are mobilising to protect people online, acting on new research showing that victims of online bullying, harassment and blackmail often find themselves struggling alone.

Community organisers in Mafraq, Irbid and East Amman held a series of six open days over the last quarter of 2021 to raise awareness about how people can seek help if they fall victim to online abuse. In a January 2021 survey conducted by Siren in these areas, one third of the 1,106 respondents reported being concerned about their online safety; among the respondents who had been affected by cybercrime, 29% said they did nothing about it.
