Local communities in East Amman and North Jordan launched a series of activities over April that are designed to raise awareness among vulnerable groups around how to stay safe online and address cyber harassment and cybercrime.
Six community based organisations located in East Amman, Mafraq and Irbid collectively commissioned the painting of over 95 murals on this theme in public spaces including schools and community centres. So far, 59 have been completed.
The CBOs leading the campaigns have been organising a range of other activities to accompany the mural painting.
For example, the National Association for Family Support in Hashimi Al Shamali, East Amman, organised a Ramadan iftar with games and entertainment for marginalised children and their families, during which the concept behind the murals was explained. Also in East Amman, the Bawabet Nazzal Association wrote a script for a puppet play on the theme that will be performed at five schools in the area in the coming month.
In Mafraq, the Arab Women’s Organisation held a short story competition as well as a drawing competition for school aged children, who were challenged to produce stories or drawings on the themes of social cohesion, or staying safe online. Seven winners were selected in each category and the best drawings were painted as murals. Rather than commissioning murals, the Nashmiat Ghadeer Al-Teer association in Khaldiyeh is developing awareness raising light boxes that will be hung in three locations around the town.
In Irbid, staff at the Eydoun association wrote a cyber protection guidebook and commissioned the creation of a short story on the issue. Both will be distributed at schools in the area. The Takafol association in Ramtha similarly created a cybercrime prevention and response guidebook that will be published after coordination with the Public Security Directorate.
